Frequently asked questions
We accept most yard waste for recycling for a reduced fee when compared to the landfill.
The fee is based on volume, and there is a cubic yard charge that each material has (minimum charges do apply). We do not take any trash, concrete, or asphalt. Please see our price list for the accepted yard waste material we can take, and please call us if you have any questions!
A cubic yard is calculated by taking the area you want to cover (measuring in feet), multiplied by the depth the material will be installed at (using the conversion chart below for depth in inches converted to feet), and then dividing that by 27 (divide by 27 because that is 3’ x 3’ x3’ which is a cubic yard).
For example, if you have an area that is 20 feet by 40 feet, and you want to go 4” deep, you would do the following:
20x 40 x 0.33, and then divide that answer by 27 for a total of 9.78 cubic yards.
Depth, in inches, converted to feet:
1” = 0.08 ft
2” = 0.17 ft
3” = 0.25 ft
4” = 0.33 ft
5” = 0.42 ft
6” = 0.50 ft
7” = 0.58 ft
8” = 0.67 ft
9” = 0.75 ft
10” = 0.83 ft
11” = 0.92 ft
12” = 1 ft
1 cubic yard will typically cover 100sf at a 3” depth. With rocks over 2” in size, the coverage will decrease to 80sf of coverage, and rocks over 4” in size, the coverage will decrease to 60sf of coverage, with continuing loss of coverage as the rock size gets larger.
It depends on the size of the bag.
Most bagged material will state how many cubic feet are in that bag. To determine how many bags equal 1 cubic yard, take 27 ( because that is 3’ x 3’ x3’ which is a cubic yard) and divide that by how many cubic feet are stated on the bag. For example, if a bag of mulch is 2 cubic feet, then it’d be 27 divided by 2 which is 13.5 bags of mulch that will equal 1 cubic yard in this example.
For new mulch installations, we recommend a 3” or 4” depth. This helps the mulch mat to itself a little better for a better chance at staying in place longer.
When top dressing existing mulch, we recommend adding mulch so that the new mulch, plus the existing mulch, equals a 3” to 4” depth.
For planting sod, seed, gardens, and/or raised beds, each of those projects are unique and can have varying depths depending on what you are doing. Please call the office to discuss so we can better lead you to the correct depth.
For road base, structural fill, and breeze, each project is unique and can have varying depths depending on what you are doing. Please call the office to discuss so we can better lead you to the correct depth.
For mulch, the most popular products have recently been (in no particular order) Buffalo Brown Fine Mulch, Cascade Cedar (“Gorilla Hair”), Caribou Brown Coarse Mulch, and Chocolate Swirl Fine Mulch.
For rock, the most popular is the Canyon Granite
For soil, the most popular is the Tri-mix or the Premium Topsoil
For compost and amendments, the most popular is Class 1 Compost
We have Premium Topsoil and Tri-mix that we mix onsite using soil, compost, and humus. Please see the product pages for what is in each.
We recommend any crushed rock that is ¾” to 1 ½” in size. While river rock can be used for driveways, we recommend the crushed rock because it mats together better than river rock.
We are open year round with the same hours. We do have closures for holidays, with some extended holiday closures.
A pull off is when a load is rigged up with rope, chain, or other material so that it can be ‘pulled off’ the truck or trailer without having to hand unload it. Due to insurance and safety, customers cannot do their own pull offs.
Rocky Top can do a pull off if your load is properly set up for one (no push offs, however) for a fee of $10. In the past, customers have hooked up to logs that then came shooting out of the pile when they tried to drive away; hooked up to other vehicles without telling that vehicle’s owner; hooked up to our equipment without permission or telling us; and other crazy stories, which is why customers cannot do their own pull offs.
Yes, each delivery has its own delivery charge.
Sometimes – we can typically do two items on one delivery, however it depends on the items and the quantity of each. A very rough rule of thumb is if the combined quantity of two items is 10 cubic yards or less, we can do both items on one delivery. However, we cannot guarantee there won’t be mixing, whether it’s a little or a lot of mixing. If you want to make sure there won’t be mixing, we’d advise you to get two separate deliveries. For more info, please call the office.
Yes, as long as you are done unloading by 10 minutes after closing time. Rather than having different dumping hours of operation, we allow customers to come in at any point we are open to dump. However, once we are closed you need to finish dumping within 10 minutes so our employees can get home to their families as well.
Due to increased fraud, we do not take payment over the phone, except for on delivery orders placed over the phone since the cardholder will be present at the delivery.
